Introduction and general information toluene

About toluene

Toluene is a clear and colorless liquid that is often obtained naturally from coal tar. Phenylmethane and aniseen are other names of this dangerous chemical.

Among other characteristics of this product, it can be mentioned that it is flammable, which makes it very important to observe safety precautions during use.

The smell of toluene is similar to thinner, it is soluble in organic compounds, and it is also insoluble in water, which makes it an excellent solvent in various industries, such as adhesives, paints, and thinners, etc.

Wide applications of toluene in industry

1- Color and resin making
In the paint industry, solvents are always the most important and widely used materials that dilute the paint and make the paint spread better on the surfaces.
Toluene is known as an excellent solvent in the paint industry, and it is even used to produce paint and resin; It is also known as a solvent for printing inks.
Most of the paints that are used in the exterior and interior of the building contain toluene, which helps to dry the paint quickly and helps maintain the quality of the paint by creating a thin coating.

2- gluing
Toluenes often act as viscosity reducers and thinners in adhesives. In fact, the viscosity of the glue is the main factor that determines how thin or thick the glue is.
When toluene is combined with other glue compounds, it prevents the viscosity from increasing and helps the glue to flow as well as possible.

3- Gasoline production
In the production of fuel, including gasoline, toluene plays a very important role; In this way, it is mixed with other compounds such as xylene and benzene and then added to gasoline, this work increases the octane.
In fact, the higher the octane rating in gasoline production, the higher its ignition speed, as a result, the car engine is less damaged; For this reason, the importance of using toluene for better fuel quality and higher octane cannot be ignored.

4- Laboratory
As we mentioned above, toluene is known as an excellent solvent in laboratories because it dissolves other chemicals well and does not react dangerously with them.
Other important uses of toluene include the following:
• In the leather tanning process
• Metal cleaner
• Manufacture of disinfectant products
• Manufacture of polyurethanes
• In the production of medicines
• In the production of tnt explosives
• Silicone sealant
